USIK Igor Ivanovych

USIK Igor Ivanovych graduated from Dnipropetrovsk Mining Institute in 1976 majoring in “Technology and complex mechanization of open-pit mining” having received qualification of a mining engineer.

From 1976 to 1979 he was postgraduate student of the Department of Open-Pit Mining of Dnipropetrovsk Mining Institute.

From 1979 he was an engineer of the Scientific and Research Center; senior research scientist; assistant of the Department of Open-Pit Mining; Head of the applied research laboratory No.17.

Since 1993 he has been Associate Professor of the Department of Construction of Mines and Substructures; since 2001 – Professor of the Department.

From 1995 he was Deputy Head of the Dean of the Faculty of Mine Construction; since 1998 up to now he has been the Dean of the Faculty of Construction of the National Mining University.

Currently he delivers lectures in such subjects as �Blasting Operations�, �Fundamentals of Physics of Rocks�, �Processes while constructing exploration mine workings�, and �Foundations of Mining Practice�. Besides, he gives classes and laboratory research; supervises practical training and predegree practice of students, and undergraduate’s constructional design.

He is a member of Rectorate and Academic Council of the National Mining University.

Research of Professor Usik is in the field of analysis and determination of rules of rock failure process and improvement of drilling-and-blasting techniques. Among other things it concerns the design of new explosive charges, techniques for rock failure with the help of blasting, and geotechnology upgrading. The problems are the extension of persistent fundamental and applied research by the Department in the field of mining and construction technologies. Results of research by I.I. Usik have been reflected in eighty scientific papers and certificates of autorship, and numerous reports of research he supervised and participated.

I.I. Usik has been awarded �Shakhtarska Slava� order of 2nd and 3rd degree, Anniversary medal of the National Mining University, and honorary diplomas. He also has honorable mentions from the University authorities.
